A new NZ Flag, Our Flag - designed by Clint Woolly

NZ Flag vs. Our FlagMore about this page
Currently in New Zealand there is much debate over whether the existing New Zealand Flag still reflects the New Zealand of today. Its people, its culture, its pride.

Above is the design concept of 25 year old Website Designer Clint Woolly of Auckland, New Zealand.

The design concept is entitled - Our Flag. Below are notes on his concept.

the design notes

"Our Flag" is divided into two sections.
a) The triangle section including the (white) fern over a black and red background and white strip.
b) The original NZ Flag blue background with an enhanced red star Southern Cross.

Break down of a)
i The silver (coloured white) fern over the black background symbolises our strong sport culture and history. New Zealand sports teams throughout the decades have always worn the black and white and have much pride for it.

ii The red strip and narrower white strip reflect our historical ties with Great Britain.

iii The arrangement of black to white to red, gives tribute to the Maori Culture and People -the first people to make New Zealand their home.

iv The triangle section though is truly New Zealand. Our past, our culture, our pride.

Break down of b)
i Basically it is much the same as the existing NZ Flag. This part of the flag still represents who we are and where we are. New Zealand is a group of islands surrounded by vast ocean in the Southern Hemisphere.

ii I have altered the stars a little. The bottom star was moved closer to the top three to allow me to enlarge the constellation. In a more emphasised position it balances the left portion of the flag.

The overall design is bold, striking, unique, Kiwiana, can be held high with pride and reflects the people of NZ, as one nation and one people. The colours are about us, they are colours we've always been proud of, just utilised in a more New Zealand concept.

In closing I feel that this flag concept truly reflects who we are. Kiwis, New Zealanders. United together.

"i think its great and i love it.i love it more than ever even when i first layed eyes on it.you have my support" - E Cook

"I live in Great Britain and stumbled across your site by accident. As strange as this may sound coming from a Brit, I love your design and think it represents New Zealand much better than the current flag. I wish you all my best wishes in trying to get this flag adopted, which I hope it one day will be." - TJ

"Looks very nice, I could see myself waving this flag in support of NZ." - L Miller

"This FLAG is TUMEKE i have sent the link too all my whanau and they are all impressed... All Kiwi's would be proud to fly that flag." - R Calder

"I think your design is a great solution for those that want to retain some aspects of the traditional design." - R Capper

"At 1st I was quite weary about the design - but then it was well justified by Mr Woolly. Now its growing on me. What I like most is that the southern cross is kept. The Maori tri colour attempt is good ..." - M Byar

"Well done, great design. I was so disenchanted with designs I had seen previously... Definitely the best I have seen, by some way. Your rationale for colours etc is exactly my thinking. You've got my support!" - B Middleton

"Like the flag, like the rationale ... " - R Shearer
